Reimagining the Palestinian ribat and their Role in the creation of the Islamic Maritime Frontier
Sinopsis
The Palestinian ribāṭs (ribāṭat) were integral components of both the Islamic maritime frontier and the sacralization of the Syro-Palestinian coast, yet they remain a poorly understood phenomenon. A militaristic bias in both scholarship and the historical sources has resulted in their conflation with forts and watchtowers and a focus on their role in coastal defense. This paper examines the development and multicomponent nature of the Palestinian ribāṭs, and seeks to position them in a wider economic, social, and spiritual landscape. It uses other Islamic institutions from Syria-Palestine and North Africa as models to explore expanded roles for ribāṭs, including possible functions as nuclei for settlements and agricultural development, waystations along coastal trade routes, tools of propaganda, and symbols of wealth, legitimacy, and power.
